Welcome to ISM's Blog, Think Tank

Well, I think it is safe to say that 2020 has highlighted that you need to be able to adapt to change. And this is coming from someone who normally says no bueno to change. Change can happen quickly and whether we have had time to prepare or not, it can disorient us and bring on feelings of insecurity and panic.

Whatever the situation is, staying calm and in control is essential to your survival and success. Below are 3 tips to cope with the stress of change and how you can remain in control when change happens.

1. Take a minute to balance yourself

There is no doubt that experiencing sudden, big change causes both mental and physical shock, especially when the whole world is feeling it. There is a strange juxtaposition between finding comfort in the “we're all in this together” and feeling very alone. Everyone is in the same boat and no one knows what is going to happen next and what the outcomes will be. It is important to take a second to balance yourself as in the initial stage of coping, you will feel likely confused and uncertain. Take the time to understand the situation that you're in and seek clarity when needed. It is important you remember to take a moment, breathe and know it is all going to be ok.

2. Accept & embrace it

Get angry, be sad and then, move on. There needs to be a point where you accept the change and decide to move forward. It is important to be open to new opportunities brought on change. You may be tempted to resist change but you should embrace it. They say if you get caught in a rip you should go with it rather than try to swim against it. The same goes for change, the more you resist it, the more potential harm it can do. Ride the wave of change and embrace the opportunities it may present you.

Don't forget: Your values! Look at your values and remember to stick to them when times get tough.

3. Take action

Now, it’s time to TAKE ACTION! With change, there are so many things that are out of our control however, there are still things we can take control over. For instance, take control of your daily schedule and maintain structure, get up at the same time every day and stick to a routine, network with colleagues in your area of interest or learn new skills.

In 2020, everything is changing constantly. This means, you should be changing. Exploring different areas of study, reexamining your passion, what drives you, what makes you happiest. Continuing your education outside of work to improve your skills and marketability is invaluable and a great way to keep in control when everything around you is changing.

✨PRO TIP✨: Look after yourself. Meditation, exercise and journaling can help you to develop inner strength for when times are tough!

Never get too comfortable because change is inevitable! But remember, take a moment, accept it and then take action. You’ve got this.
