Your career and your health are two of the most important investments in your life, so are you investing properly in yourself? Make 2019 the year you SMASH your career and professional goals. Here are 5 steps to get you started.

  1. Take Inventory

Some people can easily point out where they want to be in their career; however, identifying how to get there can be a little tricky. First thing first, it’s time to identify and write a list of the skills you currently have. Keep this handy and make sure you add to it throughout your career as you develop new skills.

  1. Career Research.

Now that you have an idea of you current skills, it is time to identify the gaps. Take a look at that ultimate position or career goal and the people in these positions that you look up to. What do they really excel in? Why do you look up to them? Perhaps review job openings that list the required skills for that position. The more you learn, the easier it will be to make decisions and set goals for yourself. Write down a list of skills you will need to develop to achieve your career goal.

  1. Invest in yourself, so people will invest in you

Time to close the gaps! You have identified the required skills to hit your career goals, its time to invest in yourself. ISM has a range of financial and business programs that might assist you with reaching your goals. Check them out here and make sure you DOWNLOAD OUR FREE STUDY PLAN for 2019.

  1. Action Plan

Now we know what and how we are going to develop the skills to hit our career goals, we need to create an action plan and stick to it!

  • Plan out your year and don’t let anything get in your way you achieving!
  • Put your action plan up somewhere visible.
  • Remind yourself of your end goal and why you are doing this each day to keep you motivated.

Smaller actions help keep momentum and verbalising your priorities keeps you accountable and clear. E.g. Tell your family between 8pm-9pm you will study every day, non-negotiable.

  1. Record your successes!

How are you going to measure your success? Even the smallest step forward is a sign of progress. Make sure you celebrate success to reinforce behaviours and the hard work you have put in. Keep note of any career successes you have and update your resume to reflect your new skills and achievements. This will come in VERY handy for promotions and will help you stand out from the crowd.

You now have a solid outlook on what needs to be done. You are one step closer to go all in when that new opportunity comes your way!

Enough reading, TAKE ACTION!
